Various governments since independence have tried in peculiar ways to solve the problem of graduate unemployment but the situation seems to be worsening as the days go by in our present dispensation.
What really is the cause, how can we scrape it and how can we position ourselves not to get necked deep in this circumstance.
For me, the regular cry and hullabaloo by social commentators, experts, educationists and technocrats, that graduate unemployment is as a result of various governments inability to put in place proper policies, is not the sole cause.
Having said this, the onus also lies on our universities to also offer more specialized courses in their various campuses. Certain courses in our universities do not equip students with specialized skills to be well positioned for employment in the job market. Many a times, employers tell job seekers that their courses are too generalized and that they prefer employing people who studied specialized courses to those who offered the generalized courses.
As a matter of fact, my heart beat profusely when I see graduates who are so anxious for employment and travel the length and breadth of this country in search of jobs to earn a decent living no matter the conditions and consequences surrounding these jobs.
This whole matter has deteriorated to the extent that we now have graduate unemployment association in Ghana. All hands should be brought on deck to treat this peril as a matter of urgency, because the frustrations of our predecessors do not give any hope for those of us who are yet to step out of school for employment.
However, there should be a joint action by both the government and the universities. The government should make sure that proper and effective policies are put in place to ensure that the youth have a secured employment future and the universities should also review and repackage some of their courses to equip students with more specialized skills to make them eligible for immediate employment in the job market.
